Frequently Asked Questions

Is it okay if I pet a hedgehog?

In order to avoid being touched, hedgehogs will curl up and erect their spines when approached. Stroking one of them will not cause it to uncurl and approach you. Those who feel threatened are more likely to do everything they can to protect themselves.

It’s better not to touch one with your bare hands because they contain ticks and other diseases.

Are hedgehogs territorial in nature?

Animals’ tendency to defend their territory explains in part why they don’t appear to be affectionate. It’s a tremendously hostile environment for everyone or anything that enters their sphere of influence.

They won’t harm you, but they also won’t welcome you into their territory because hedgehogs aren’t territorial. Simply put, they are loners who thrive when left alone.

Is a Hedgehog an Appropriate Pet?

Everyone has a soft spot in their heart for hedgehogs, and many people want one as a pet. Keeping wild hedgehogs as pets is never a good idea. They wouldn't be contented if they were confined, and they wouldn't be able to adjust to living with humans either.

They are active at night

Hedgehogs spend the most of their time sleeping at night. They go out at night to hunt for food and aren't accustomed to live during the daytime. ' If you were to keep one as a pet, you might never see it because it would remain dormant when you were awake. Aside from that, you'd have no way of knowing if the animal was in excellent health or required aid.

Several reasons why hedgehogs are not suitable pets

Unlike domesticated animals, hedgehogs prefer to live in the wild. These creatures like alone and will go to great lengths to avoid encounters with other people. Attempting to keep one as a pet could result in a tremendous lot of stress for them.

Disease and ticks

Hedgehogs are known to contain ticks, which can infect humans, as well.

Ticks can transmit Lyme disease, which can be deadly to people. Fortunately, this can be treated, but if left untreated, it might result in lasting nerve and memory loss.
Salmonella bacteria can be found in hedgehog droppings. This can make them sick, but it can also make you sick.

When handling a hedgehog, you run the chance of being pricked by one of its spines if you’re not careful. Despite the fact that these pricks are safe, they can induce a rash in some people.
Hedgehogs can also carry ringworm, therefore keeping one around your other pets is not recommended.
