Harleyette meets Heather H05

All the Hedgehogs on this site are Wild and European species.

Having uploaded two videos of hedgehogs being very unpleasant with each other, this was a surprise. Heather was quietly munching peanuts out a a feeder designed for squirrels. Harleyette shows up, says 'Hi' and gets on with munching from various bowls.

When Heather starts moving Harleyette gets very anxious and reverses off the feeder station keeping Heather under close scrutiny. This is a technique that Harleyette often uses to avoid getting the worse in an attempted battering!

But all Heather does is hide behind the squirrel feeder!

Who wants to write a thesis and get a Phd on what these critters are up to??? Plenty of scope and kudos for the first person in with the correct explanation of what they are up to, why and who makes which noise and what it means!

*LOL*

A Huffing Time for Heather! H14

This time a large, as yet unidentified, hedgehog showed up and for about seven and a half minutes munched away on a bowl of peanuts. Then Heather, (marked 'Z' or 'N' ) a much smaller, hedgehog showed up and suddenly wished she hadn't, on being huffed into a ball.

After just over a minute, Heather uncurls, only to be huffed again!

Another minute passes by and Heather uncurls to get stuck into her favourite task, raiding the squirrel feeder for peanuts!

Hedgehog drinking H01

Harrison Goes for a roll H13

Hazel arrived (smudge vertical white back right at the back) and ate peacefully and Harrison (White Cross on top of back), a rapidly  growing, but much smaller, shows up and eats for a bit, then Harrison goes over to say 'Hello' and Whoosh - off he goes for a Roll down the hill!

Hazel soon returns to the feeder board for a quick scratch, as if saying 'Not only do I NOT want you ! but I don't want your fleas either, then has a drink

Close-up of Heather munching. H12

This is a try at using a new IR webcam which focuses at lot closer than our normal IR Camera.

It's Heather who is still one of our smaller hedgehogs munching chopped peanuts.

Taken on the night of 23rd July 2006.

A Horrendous Hour for Hamish, H11

On the night of the 14th July (couple of days ago) we recorded a video which was unusual:-

Early in the evening, Harrison and Hughie  shared the feeder station without fighting, so we though, maybe peace and tranquillity had descended during a lull in the mating season! Were we wrong! YES BIG TIME!!!

An hour or so later, Hamish who we hadn't seen in a month, made his very welcome return joining other hoggies at the feeding station. The video starts a few minutes earlier with Hazel stopping by for a snack:-

Cast:-

Hazel - white marks on back above the tail

Hercules - one horizontal white line on both sides

Hamish - a large 'X' on either side

Heather - a 'N' on the top

Harrison - a '+' on the top

It's just over 40 minutes long. Hazel shows up and is joined with a minute or two by Hercules, 7 minutes later Hamish shows up and the huffing starts!

Heather shows up and Hamish starts uncurling but is soon back in a ball! Three minutes later tries again but within 8 minutes is huffed by Hazel! Fourteen minutes later Hamish finally saunters off.

After a 13 minute 'Intermission' Hamish is back only to be huffed for the third time, on this occasion by Harrison. What a 'Welcome'!!!

Horatio's Revenge! A Tale of Hedgehog Battering! H10

Hercules batters a much bigger hedgehog! Big Mistake!!! As a little while later proves! *LOL*

What goes on inside a Hedgehog's Nestbox! H09

For those of you who are curious enough to wonder what Hedgies get up to during the night in a Nestbox, here is a small part of the answer! (Hey! Aren't they nocturnal? So shouldn't they be on the prowl for dinner?)

It appears that if they eat well, they like to have about an hour and a halfs kip somewhere quiet.

The scene is set exclusively in Nestbox #1, #2 and #3

Heaven has 3 white stripes running from side to opposite side.

Hercules has two horizontal white stripes, one each side.

Before the camera started rolling Harrison visited NB #3 around 9.33pm leaving his scent no doubt.

11.41pm saw Heaven have a good munch at the main feeder station and eventually wander off, winding up in NB #2, staying there for 26 minutes, then Hercules joins her!!!! But Hercules very quickly leaves and very briefly checks out NB #3.

12.31am Heaven leaves NB #2 and goes into NB #1 !!! Staying there until 1.08am.

End of recording.

Now for some this might be as boring as it gets, but for the curious........
